MA: And the last Board duty is to 6 conclude today with three adjourn in memories. 7 First off, Senator Sharon Runner was more 8 than a talented public servant and a fierce advocate 9 for her constituents. She was well loved and a 10 deeply regarded member of the BOE extended family. 11 Our thoughts, prayers and love from our 12 entire agency is with Board Member George Runner and 13 his family today and we mourn the loss of a 14 wonderful public servant. 15 Secondly, Mr. Paul Jarvis started with the 16 Board of Equalization's Customer Service Center back 17 in November 2007 as a Tax Technician I. Mr. Jarvis 18 worked his way up to Tax Technician II -- actually 19 Tax Technician III within the Customer Service 20 Center where he was well known for his strong work 21 ethic, compassion for his customers, and a friend to 22 all his fellow coworkers. 23 And finally, Miss Susan Dyckes started her 24 state career in November 1995 at the California 25 Office of Real Estate Appraisers as an Associate 26 Senior Real Property Appraiser/Investigator. She 27 continued her state service at the Department of 28 General Services in California's FI$Cal Project 3 1 where she performed as an Enterprise Project Manager 2 responsible for the analysis of existing DGS 3 business process, policies and legacy systems. 4 On behalf of the State Board of 5 Equalization, we express our deepest sympathies to 6 their families and friends. 7 And the meeting of the State Board of 8 Equalization is -- 9 MS. HARKEY: I have an adjourn in memory. 10 MS. MA: Okay. Ms. Harkey has an 11 additional adjourn in memory. 12 MS. HARKEY: Thank you, Member -- or 13 Board -- or Chairwoman Ma -- sorry -- and Board 14 Members. 15 I thought it was especially appropriate, 16 because we're here in Orange County today, to 17 announce that last week a great public servant, 18 fabulous lady, Marian Bergeson passed away last week 19 at the age of 90 from complications relating to 20 pancreatic cancer. 21 Marian personified what we should all hope 22 to be. She was intelligent, she was kind and 23 devoted to serving her constituents and the people 24 of the State of California. Always meticulously 25 dressed and coiffed. She exemplified honor, courage 26 and grace under pressure that we all know politics 27 can test. 28 Marian loved life and spent her 83rd 4 1 birthday skydiving, attempting to complete her 2 bucket list. She had already achieved a long list 3 of political accomplishments. These included: 4 Being the first woman to serve in both the Assembly 5 and the Senate; serving as the Educational Secretary 6 in Governor Wilson's administration; serving as 7 Orange County Supervisor; and she was also appointed 8 to serve for the California Transportation 9 Commission, representing Orange County on that 10 commission. 11 I will remember her as being one of Orange 12 County's most effective public servants. If you ran 13 for office in Orange County, you always asked for 14 Marian to -- to endorse you. She would always take 15 her time to meet with you. She returned your phone 16 calls and provide you with sound advice. She was a 17 great mentor, a fabulous and highly respected leader 18 in this community and state-wide. 19 After elected office, she founded the 20 Marian Bergeson Excellence and Public Service 21 Series, which was encouraged by all around her. 22 It's a well regarded competitive program that seeks 23 to increase the number of women elected, appointed, 24 volunteer or staff positions for the local, state 25 and federal levels. It's been quite successful. 26 The program is thriving and continues to 27 influence women state-wide who want to get involved, 28 providing tools to navigate the political world 5 1 successfully. 2 Marian is survived by her husband Garth, 3 children and grandchildren. A public memorial 4 service is planned for sometime in August; I'm sure 5 it will be standing room only as we honor this great 6 lady. 7 Members, I ask that we adjourn in memory of 8 the iron lady and great lady of Orange County 9 politics, Marian Bergeson.
